1959 Mennonite Encyclopedia

1959 The Mennonite Encyclopedia, Vol IV, O-Z Supplement, Mennonite Publishing House, Scottdale, PA shows:

"Umstatt, Hans Peter, moved from Crefeld, Germany, to Germantown, Pa., in 1685. His daughter Eva married the immigrant Hendrick (Heinrich) Pannabecker (q.v.). His son Johannes (John) Umstatt moved in 1702 or shortly after to Perkiomen Township along the Skippack (q.v.). C. Henry Smith assumes that the Umstatts were Mennonites, and this is probable since later descendants called Umstead were to be found in the Mennonite Church in Montgomery County, Pa." VDZ.

COMMENTS

I only have a copy of the cover page and the page with the above information, which does not have a page number. An attached note shows "C. Henry Smith, The Menn. Immigration to Pennsylvania (Norristown, 1929) 94, 106, 114, 121, 139, note 23; MQR VII (1933) 234f," presumably as the source, but I don't know who actually wrote this item.

We know that Hans Peter came from Kriegsheim, not from Crefeld, and that there is no real evidence as of this time to indicate Hans Peter's having been a Mennonite.
